Doljanchi History
The Doljanchi, a cherished Korean tradition, traces its origins to ancient times when infant mortality rates were high. Celebrated on a child's first birthday, it signifies the passage through the critical first year of life. The term "Dol" means first birthday, while "janchi" refers to a celebratory gathering. Rooted in gratitude for the child's survival, the Doljanchi incorporates customs like the Doljabi ceremony, where symbolic items predict the child's future. Today, while retaining its traditional essence, the Doljanchi often combines elements of Korean heritage with modern celebrations, emphasizing family unity, community, and the child's prosperity.
